Dance Positive: Research-Backed Children's Dance
At Twinkle Star Dance Academy, our approach to children's dance is informed by peer-reviewed research published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. Through Dance Positive, we measure how children feel before and after class, and our published study found that children's mood was maintained or improved after the large majority of classes. Explore the research and what makes Twinkle Star different below.
Most dance studios promise benefits.
We published the research.
At Twinkle Star Dance Academy, we have always believed a joyful dance class is good for children. So we measured it. The research behind our approach is now peer-reviewed and published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
Plenty of programs say dance is good for kids. We have the evidence.
Most children's activities make promises about confidence, focus, and happiness. Very few have ever put those promises to the test. Twinkle Star Dance Academy was built around a simple commitment: measure what actually happens in class, and be honest about what we find.
That commitment led to a peer-reviewed study, published in 2026, that followed 256 children and adolescents and analyzed more than 4,000 paired before-and-after mood check-ins. Across those classes, children's mood was maintained or improved 85.8% of the time. The pattern held across dance styles, instructors, schedules, and experience levels.
Dance Positive: a window into how your child feels in class.
Dance Positive is the measurement platform created by our founders, Tiffany and Paul Henderson. With a quick, private emoji tap at the start and end of class, it captures how children feel before and after they dance. No phones, no pressure, no interruption. Just a simple check-in that takes seconds and helps us keep making classes better.
A Screen-Free Social Hour
A real hour of movement, music, and friendship, away from screens and full of genuine connection.
Mood, Measured
A quick, private mood check-in before and after class, the same approach behind our published research.
Progress You Can See
Skill milestones and achievements tracked over time, so growth is something families can actually watch unfold.
Encouraged, Never Ranked
Our classes are non-competitive by design. Children are encouraged and celebrated, never ranked against each other.
University research standards, not marketing claims.
This is not a wellness app or a slogan. The study behind Dance Positive was conducted with full ethical oversight and independent review (IRB-approved), and published open access in Frontiers in Psychology: Performance Science. It followed 256 children and adolescents ages 5 to 17 and collected 4,224 paired mood measurements before and after class.
Science is honest. So are we.
Our research shows a consistent association between dance classes and how children feel, not a guaranteed outcome for every child on every day, and not proof that dance alone is the cause. We will always tell you exactly what the evidence does and does not say. We think that honesty is part of what makes Twinkle Star different.
"What I find incredible is not just that the kids felt better after class. It's how consistent it was. It didn't matter what style they danced, how advanced they were, or who was teaching. It showed up for the whole class."Tiffany C. Henderson · Co-Founder & Lead Author
